QantasLink will introduce flights between Sydney and Launceston from December, marking the first time the airline will directly connect the two cities since 2004.

The airline’s Sydney-Hobart route will also make a comeback in November, after being paused due to Tasmanian border restrictions.

Flights from Sydney to Launceston will initially be as a seasonal service with four return flights per week from 4 December 2020 until 1 February 2021.

Sydney-Hobart, meanwhile, will return from 6 November 2020, with 11 return services per week.

“We know there is huge pent-up demand for domestic travel with Australians looking for new destinations to explore,” said Andrew David, CEO of Qantas Domestic and Qantas International.

Speaking of Launceston, “we’ll keep a close eye on demand and if it proves successful, we will look to extend the service.”

The news follows the Tasmanian Government’s announcement that it plans to open its border to travellers arriving from New South Wales from 6 November 2020, without requiring them to self-isolate for 14 days, as is currently the case.

It also comes just weeks after Jetstar confirmed it would also significantly increase its Tasmanian flying by launching new flights from the Gold Coast to Hobart from December, increasing Hobart flights from Adelaide and Brisbane, and boosting flights from Brisbane to Launceston.
