Virgin Australia is dropping eight regional routes from its network, as well as one international service.
Flights from Sydney to Albury, Ayers Rock, Hervey Bay, Port Macquarie and Tamworth are all cancelled, as are those from Brisbane and Mount Isa to Cloncurry, and from Melbourne to Mildura.
International flights from Sydney to Tonga, which had already been paused because of international border closures, will also be cancelled.
“We remain committed to regional Australia and we plan to continue to fly to 20 regional destinations in Australia,” reads a statement from Virgin Australia.
“We will continue to review our network as travel restrictions ease and demand returns,” the statement continues.
The news follows Virgin Australia’s announcement that its regional lounges in Alice Springs and Perth (Terminal 2, used by Virgin Australia Regional Airlines/VARA) will not return.
